PARQUE NACIONAL DA SERRA DO GANDARELA AMEAÇADO

COMUNICADO 

Comunicamos que a Vale S.A. pediu Licença de Operação de Pesquisa Mineral (LOP) para fazer 227 praças de sondagem geotécnica e 26,20 quilômetros de acessos complementares para seu empreendimento na Serra do Gandarela, incluindo as barragens de rejeito na bacia do Ribeirão da Prata (águas Classe 1). Denunciamos como muito grave esta tentativa da Vale S.A. de iniciar o projeto Mina Apolo na Serra do Gandarela, à revelia do processo de criação do Parque Nacional e da relevância ambiental para Belo Horizonte e sua região metropolitana, especialmente no que se refere à produção de água e biodiversidade. Mais grave ainda é que parte das sondagens (e seus inúmeros impactos) estão dentro dos limites propostos para o Parque Nacional da Serra do Gandarela.

Parque da Serra do Gandarela ameaçado 

Vale S.A., one of the world’s largest mining companies is trying to obtain a license from the governments of Brazil and the Minas Gerais State to dig for iron within the limits propounded for the Gandarela Natural Park. A favorable decision from the governments of Brazil and Minas Gerais would open the way for the irreversible devastation and killing of a precious water producing system in Brazil: 

"We find ourselves ethically destitute just when, for the first time, we are faced with ultimacy, the irreversible closing down of the earth's functioning in its major life systems. Our ethical traditions know how to deal with suicide, homicide and even genocide, but these traditions collapse entirely when confronted with biocide, the killing of the life systems of the earth, and geocide, the devastation of the earth itself." – Thomas Berry 

The Gandarela region is also home of plant and animal species that play a key role in the maintenance of the water producing ecosystem, and for the survival of millions of people: 

“Loss of the world’s genetic diversity would be worse than energy depletion, economic collapse, limited nuclear war or conquest by a totalitarian government. As terrible as those catastrophes would be for us, they could be repaired in a few generations. The one process ongoing in the 1980’s that will take millions of years to correct is the loss of genetic and species diversity by the destruction of natural habitats.
